Attorney Profiles

John Burke, Esq. was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1979, the New York bar in 1980 and now concentrates his practice in civil litigation. Over the years, Mr. Burke's clients have included many standard as well as surplus and excess lines insurers. He has represented a wide variety of risks, including developers, contractors large and small, commercial owners of residential and industrial properties, product manufacturers, restaurant and tavern owners and generators, haulers and receivers of hazardous wastes.

Mr. Burke has handled litigation over a broad range - professional liability of all kinds, construction, employment, liquor law, premises and product liability as well as the variety of issues generated by New Jersey's highly regulated automobile insurance industry. He has extensive experience in insurance coverage litigation and has lectured frequently on that subject as well as litigation and trial techniques. He is the former Chairperson of the Insurance Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, and is a member of the American and Morris County Bar Associations as well. He was certified by the Supreme Court as a Civil Trial Attorney in 1987.

Mr. Burke is a graduate of Manhattanville College and St. John's University Law School and resides in Wyckoff, New Jersey with his wife Andrea and their three children.

John Potenza, Esq. has been a lawyer since 1976. Mr. Potenza has extensive experience in the area of construction litigation, having represented both self-insured general contractors and insurers of contractors and architects in personal injury lawsuits resulting from construction equipment and high rise work site accidents. His cases have ranged from wrongful death claims to multi million dollar property damage losses.

Mr. Potenza also has "trial to verdict" experience in Federal and State court civil rights litigation when settlement, for obvious political reasons, is not a palatable option. He has represented town and city police departments against claims of alleged violations of citizens' civil rights and police brutality.

Mr. Potenza also handles many of our significant product liability claims and the multi-party, commercial premises, liability claims.

He is a graduate of Notre Dame University and obtained his law degree from Notre Dame University School of Law in 1976. Mr. Potenza served as a medic in the United States Army from 1968 through 1971 and was a volunteer EMT with the Ramsey, New Jersey Volunteer Ambulance Squad until just recently. Before beginning his career in private practice, Mr. Potenza clerked for the late Van Y. Clinton, Judge of the New Jersey Superior Court.

Kenneth A. Resnick, Esq. is a partner concentrating his practice in all areas of litigation. He has been a lawyer since 1989. Mr. Resnick has represented the interests of insurers and their insureds in a variety of areas, including defense of commercial premises and automobile liability defense. In particular, over recent years, Mr. Resnick pursued disposition of these matters in different and creative methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

A cum laude graduate of Rider University, he obtained his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1989. He is a member of the Morris County, New Jersey State and American Bar Associations.

Janet L. Pisansky, Esq. is a partner who is a Certified Civil Trial Attorney. Admitted to practice in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania since 1994, she specializes in litigating all aspects of insurance and tort law. She also litigates and arbitrates Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claims on behalf of the New Jersey Property Liability Insurance Guaranty Association and various uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) claims on behalf of numerous insurance carriers.

Ms. Pisansky graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in1991 and obtained her law degree from Rutgers University Law School-Camden in 1994. She clerked for the Honorable Miriam Span, Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, 1994-1995. Ms. Pisansky is currently the President of the Union County Bar Association as well as a member of the Morris County Bar Association, American Bar Association, and New Jersey State Bar Association where she served as Chair of the General Council Executive Committee. She is a former District X Ethics Committee Investigator.

Pilu D. Patel, Esq. was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 2005 and the New York Bar in 2006. She has joined Burke & Potenza to concentrate her practice in the area of civil litigation, specifically focusing on Personal Injury Protection Arbitrations, litigation of personal injury cases in the Superior Court and other tort related issues. Additionally, she appears before the Social Security Administration on disability application claims. Ms. Patel holds a Corporate Counsel Certificate demonstrating her expertise in corporate law matters.

Ms. Patel is a graduate of Boston University and Syracuse University Law School. While in law school, she was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society, participated in numerous competitions, and was inducted into the Order of Barristers in 2005.

Ms. Patel is fluent in Gujarati and conversant in Hindi.

Dorothy Davis was admitted to both the New Jersey and Arizona bars in 2008. Ms. Davis graduated from Rutgers Law School-Newark in May of 2008. During law school, she externed with the Essex County Public Defenders Office-Adult Division and New Jersey Attorney General Consumer Fraud Prosecution Unit.

Ms. Davis will be practicing in the area of defense of civil litigation, including product liability, premises liability and personal injury claims. She is a member of the Arizona State Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, Morris County Bar Association and American Bar Association.
